Included here is my own vinyl rip of the Bob Marley “Rainbow Country” 12 inch Maxi Single pressed by Daddy Kool Records in 1985. I recently obtained this gem from the MIDNIGHT DREAD‘s mint vinyl archive. Make sure to toggle the quality to 720 (HD)!
On the flip is another Lee “Scratch” Perry production of Augustus Pablo’s “Lama Lava” featuring The Upsetters. You may recognize “Lama Lava” as the “Java” riddim. This instrumental was used countless times by countless musicians and producers, however, writing, arrangement, and production credit go to Horace Swaby (Augustus Pablo) and Clive Chin. Interesting note, the original “Java” instrumental features samples from Sol Bloom’s “Streets of Cairo.”
Marley’s “Rainbow Country” is an entirely original composition which was produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry and recorded at the Black Ark, Perry’s lo-fi, hi-smoke earth and cinder block studio. Although, in my opinion, this recording was relatively unknown for years, who can forget Ziggy Marley & the melody Makers breathing new life into this tune on 1991’s JAHMEKYA?
