Courtesy of Before Zero Records and I Grade Records, this brand new series of vinyl singles honors both the vocal and version culture of the reggae sound system and the profound lyricism of Vaughn Benjamin. Before Zero Records worked diligently with Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred of I Grade Dub to mix a series of dub mixes from a carefully curated selection of Tippy’s extensive works with Vaughn Benjamin. The vocal and corresponding dub mixes were then cut to wax by Lewis Hopkin of Star Delta and wrapped in a collage made of Ras Marcus’s artworks, which he crafted for various LP covers of Vaughn’s works throughout the years with the lyrics transcribed and printed on the rear of each sleeve.
“Sow And The Reap” is perhaps one of Vaughn Benjamin’s most audacious and lyrically potent written pieces which folds topics of political dominance, immigration policy, and human trafficking into a thought provokingly coherent song. Benjamin’s weapon is words and his lyrical poison is potent. His words are particularly cutting during “Sow And The Reap,” the final recording of Vaughn’s immense catalog of works with I Grade Records. Produced by Zion I Kings, and taken from 2021’s album Polarities, “Sow And The Reap” brims with Vaughn’s characteristic dual-meaning wordplay, using evocative metaphors to illuminate global policy. The tune’s timeless lyrical principles are matched by its inexorable reggae rhythm, featuring hefty, programmed drums by Romain “Teflon Zincfence” Arnett, and sombre trombone and space age synth, both supplied by much missed multi-instrumentalist Drew Keys. Backed by its correspondingly haunting dub.
Two of the deepest thinkers in reggae music, Vaughn Benjamin and Chronixx, trade reflections on their collaboration “Black Carbon.” Originally released on the 2021 album Polarities, the song is available for the first time as a vinyl single, backed by its dub version. Adorned with the swirling flute of Sheldon Bernard (Beres Hammond, Harmony House) and David Pransky’s mandolin, the lyrical message juxtaposes the unity that binds us with a critique of the prevailing narratives and structures that weaken this bond.
Two lyrical and spiritual forces meet as Vaughn Benjamin and Tiken Jah Fakoly awaken the profound realization that all is inherently blessed, encouraging us to accept life as it unfolds. Produced by Zion I Kings, “Everything Bless” is a gentle yet powerful reminder to embrace the present moment, cherish the divine connection with our spiritual kin, and nurture inner peace and contentment.
