Freddie McGregor is a once in a generation talent. Aside from his brilliant work at Studio One as a singer and master drummer, he has arranged and produced some extraordinary records. When you think about Freddie’s greatest albums, BOBBY BOBYLON and MR. MCGREGOR most likely come to mind. However, the first album he produced for RAS Records, 1983’s COME ON OVER, is my personal favorite. While it doesn’t have the weight of his studio one albums, COME ON OVER is one of the most uplifting and riddim-heavy albums he ever produced. I cannot say that COME ON OVER is my favorite reggae album but if I were ever diagnosed with cancer, I would come home and immediately cue it up. It never fails to lift the spirit and brighten the day.
I’m a Freddie McGregor fan to my core. In fact, of all the records I own, the one that I will never part with for any price is the “Jogging” 7-inch with the picture sleeve on the 56 Hope Road label.
