Along with Bob Marley, other reggae superstars like Third World, Burning Spear, Ras Michael and Sons of Negus, Hortense Ellis, Jah Youth, Kiddus I, and Gregory Isaacs gather for a two-day music extravaganza at Kingston’s National Arena on September 22nd and 23rd 1979. ‘ROOTS ROCK REGGAE ’79’ is organized by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church with all proceeds going to its building fund and for improvements to their basic school. An 11-year old Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers also make an appearance onstage.
Audio engineers from Tuff Gong and acoustic specialists from Audiophon design a special stage area and isolate each of the players’ instruments in order to maximize sound recording quality at the Arena, which is famous for its awful acoustics.

Earlier in April 1979, Bob Marley and the Wailers embarked on a world tour that takes them to Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Hawaii. Here are some great photos from New Zealand.
