One of the many Dennis Brown 7″ singles from my collection, “Praise Without Raise” features U-Brown toasting over this solid roots riddim inna murder style! I had forgotten all about this B-side, but when I flipped it and threw it on the turntable last night it was U-Brown like I’ve never heard him before. I love what he did with this version, and you will too.
On a side note, you might be surprised to find out that there is a rich WAILERS connection to this track. U-Brown toasted over many Dennis Brown versions – his most well-known probably being “Tu Sheng Peng” over Dennis Brown’s “If This World Were Mine” version, a solid instrumental riddim composed by The Revolutionaries which would ultimately become the timeless “Revolution” riddim.
U-Brown is a great friend to this website, and recently gave us an excellent interview about his life and career as a deejay. When I messaged U-Brown to tell him what I found in my collection, here is what he had to say:
“This one was produced by the late Dennis Emmanuel Brown. Give thanks to Bunny Wailer for his lyrical input while i was putting the lyrics together when I was recording this song. He was passing through at Harry J studio the same day I was recording this song. Give thanks Jah B. Give thanks to Dennis Brown for providing the chance to record another song which help to enhance my recording biography. R.I.P. DEB!!!”
