Bob Marley and the Wailers: Paul’s Mall, Boston, 1973

Today I share with you an article by “Beacon Hill Bill” that was published on October 31, 1973, a few months after The Wailers played Paul’s Mall in Boston.

Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop, located on Boylston Street opposite the Prudential center, was a popular music venue in the mid-1970s. Paul’s Mall was a popular venue from it’s opening in 1963 until it closed in 1978. Before it was Pall’s Mall Jazz Workshop, it was the Unicorn coffee house. It helped introduce acts like Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Ponies, The Wailers, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to the rock audience.

In addition to the profile article, I have included an EXCELLENT recording of The Wailers first show at Paul’s Mall on July 11, 1973. The audio for this show is amazing. It is one of the few recorded shows that features Peter Tosh on vocals/lead guitar as he would depart the band the following year. Recorded by the legendary Neil Cronin and copied in a trade in the mid 70’s to two Sony PR-150 reels and mastered to CD by Matt Smith, this show is a “must have” for any Wailers fan.
