Dermot Hussey has been a fixture in Jamaican music for over 40 years. He has musically educated and inspired generations of Jamaicans with his skills in interview, production & broadcast. Within the first half of his career he interviewed and featured not only the best Jamaican artists, but also some of the best international artists from various genres. Including: Bob Marley, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Roberta Flack & Gilberto Gil. The Dermot Hussey – Bob Marley Interview was featured on the album Talking Blues, released by Island Records. His copyright footage of Bob in rehearsal and around Hope Road has been licensed to the film, “Marley”, “Rebel Music” and many others. It has also been heavily bootlegged.
Dermot has produced music programs for Jamaican radio, video-magazine programs for television, and independent film documentaries. He was the assistant production manager for the films Rockers and Countryman. Dermot co-authored, with Malika Lee Whitney, Bob Marley: Reggae King Of the World(New York EP Dutton, 1984: republished by Pomegranate Art Books,1994). All of this was accomplished within the first half of his career.
Dermot was awarded the Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica for service to media and music in 1992. The Musgrave Medal is a prestigious Jamaican Award for eminence in literature, science and the arts. In 2018, Dermot was awarded a National Honor of Order of Distinction for service to Radio Broadcasting, and the promotion of Jamaican music.
In the latter half of Dermot’s career he was music and program director for The Joint, XM Satellite Radio. He is currently an On Air Host forSiriusXM Radio’s The Joint and Real Jazz, and produces RiffinRadio, a podcast of celebrity interviews and specialty radio shows on some of the best musicians he could find spanning three decades.
