The Adventure Theatre’s (MTC) production of Cedella Marley’s fascinating children’s book caught me by surprise yesterday. The theatre, located in the vast wonderland campus of Glen Echo Park, just outside of Washington, DC, opened the play this past weekend to sellout crowds and genuine amazement among those lucky enough to take it in. With a stunningly beautiful stage set, and uber-talented, trained professional actors, the story jumps off the stage and right into the hearts of the kids. Jah Live, children, yeah!
Cedella Marley, who has sincerely supported our work here on this blog since launching almost 2 years ago, was thoughtful enough to leave 3 tickets for the Raver family at will-call so that we could experience her story first-hand. Although I presumed that only 6-year old Riley would be the only one in our bunch to connect with the show, I left the theatre yesterday feeling that I witnessed something truly beautiful. Much of this can be attributed to the actors, who brought this story to life with close-to-authentic Jamaican accents, sayings, and euphemisms. Rasta don’t deal with no izm schizm. Also, the use of Bob Marley’s music throughout the entire play helped lend a vibration to it that will be felt by the children for some time. I highly recommend this production to anyone who has the opportunity to attend. And a big thanks to Cedella Marley, Rohan Marley, and Lindsey Shook for a great reggae day out with the family.
